What is a Wagering Requirement?
A wagering requirement tells you how many times you must bet the bonus amount before you can withdraw any winnings. A €100 bonus with a 40x wagering requirement means you must place €4,000 in total bets before a withdrawal is allowed.
Casinos present this as a reasonable condition. It is not. It is a mechanism that ensures the expected value of almost every welcome bonus is negative. The casino pays you a bonus, then attaches a requirement that statistically costs you more than the bonus is worth.
The Maths Behind Wagering Requirements
Every bet you make has an expected loss based on the game's house edge. For slots, the house edge is typically 4% (at 96% RTP). For every euro you wager, you lose €0.04 on average.
To calculate what a wagering requirement will cost you, multiply the total bets required by the house edge:
If expected loss > bonus received, the bonus is negative EV. You lose more than you gained.
Worked example: 40x wagering on a €100 bonus
You receive €100 in bonus value but are expected to lose €160 through required betting. Net: -€60.
When the casino applies WR to deposit + bonus
Playzilla applies its 35x wagering requirement to the deposit and bonus combined - not the bonus alone. This is a critical distinction. A €100 deposit and €100 bonus at 35x means you must bet €7,000, not €3,500.
Despite a lower headline WR (35x vs 40x elsewhere), the combined base makes this significantly more expensive in practice.

Game Contributions - Why 100% is Rarely the Full Story
Every casino applies contribution percentages to different game types. Only bets on qualifying games count toward your wagering total. Bets on excluded games do not reduce your wagering requirement at all - they just cost you money.
Slots almost always contribute 100%. Live casino games are frequently blocked or reduced. Some specific slot titles - often high-volatility ones where bonus hunters make the most money - are moved to reduced contribution lists.
| Game type | Smokace | Stelario | Playzilla | Verde |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most slots | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% |
| Named reduced slots (e.g. Gonzo's Quest) | 20% | Not specified | 0% | 15% (Big Bass only) |
| Table games (blackjack, roulette etc) | 0% | 5-10% | 0% | 0% |
| Live casino | Blocked entirely | 0% | 10% | Blocked entirely |
| Jackpot slots | 0% | Not specified | Blocked entirely | Not specified |
| Instant / crash games (mines, plinko, keno) | Not specified | Not specified | 10% | Blocked entirely |
Stelario's general T&C states a default wagering of 30x, but the welcome bonus promo T&C overrides this to 40x. A player reading only the main T&C would see the wrong number. Always read the individual promo terms, not the general bonus rules.
The 5 Hidden Rules That Can Void Your Bonus
These rules appear in the small print of bonus terms. Most players never read them until it is too late.
All 5 casinos we tested cap your maximum bet per spin at €5 while a bonus is active. Exceeding this - even once - voids the bonus and all associated winnings. This applies regardless of your normal stake. If you forget and place a €10 spin, you lose the bonus. The casino does not warn you in advance at the spin level.
Verde Casino gives you only 5 days to complete wagering on each bonus step - half the 10-day window offered by every other casino we tested. On a 4-step welcome pack, this creates a tight chain. If you miss one step's deadline, the remaining bonus steps are cancelled. This is the strictest deadline in our group.
Smokace requires a 3x rollover of your deposit before any withdrawal - entirely separate from the bonus wagering requirement. Even if you complete your 45x bonus WR, you still cannot withdraw until you have bet your deposit amount three times. Most players are not aware these are two different requirements running simultaneously.
Banzai has zero wagering on its welcome bonus, which is the best in our group. But it applies an aggressive reset mechanic: if you make any deposit or request a withdrawal while a bonus is active, the bonus balance is wiped entirely. You must decide upfront whether to use the bonus or skip it - you cannot run both simultaneously.
If your total wagering turnover at Verde is less than 2x your deposit at the time you request a withdrawal, the casino may withhold 20% of the withdrawal as a fee. This applies even if you have no active bonus. A player who deposits €100, does not claim a bonus, and immediately withdraws €80 could have €16 withheld.
When Wagering Requirements Are Worth Completing
Most of the time, the answer is: skip the welcome bonus and use the cashback instead. The expected loss from wagering almost always exceeds the bonus value at 35-45x multipliers.
There are two situations where completing wagering is mathematically rational. First, if the wagering requirement is very low - under 10x - the expected loss may be less than the bonus amount. Second, if the casino has no wagering requirement at all, like Banzai Casino. In that case the bonus is pure expected value with no cost attached.
Free Spin Wagering - a Separate Requirement
Free spin winnings almost always carry their own wagering requirement, separate from and in addition to the cash bonus WR. At Smokace, Stelario, Playzilla and Verde, free spin winnings must be wagered 40x before they can be withdrawn.
The practical impact is significant. 100 free spins at €0.10 per spin on a 96% RTP game produce an expected return of about €9.60. At 40x wagering, you must bet €384 worth of spins - expected loss of about €15.36. The expected value of those 100 free spins is approximately -€5.76 before you start.
Free spins are not free. They are a marketing tool designed to increase the total wagering requirement. See our full free spins value guide →
